Great Food, Excellent Service   Ashoka remains my favorite Indian restaurant in all of San Francisco. The food is fresh and delightful and the service iis beyond friendly. I have never been disappointed here and it seems every friend I bring here loves it too.  The pumpkin soup is unique and delicious as is the rest of the menu, and as a vegetarian I am especialy fond of the Avial Malbar entree. Add some naan and you will be in heaven! The building is a unique narrow space with a lot of charm. The staff is friendly and accomodating You might feel that you wait a bit for the food but it is only because they make it fresh to order and is well worth the wait. You are always seated promptly and their wait staff is not only Beautiful, but so friendly and welcoming. There is no doubt that I will return over and over again for the best Indian food in San Francisco. Pros: Great food, excellent service, unique ambiance. Cons: None. Revised: August 2010   Authentic Indian cuisine in a romantic atmosphere for Marina diners    High ceilings, red velvet seats and Travertine stone tile floors give the feeling of royalty. That the restaurant is named after one-time Indian emperor Ashoka the Great is no coincidence. The long, narrow dining room seats up to 42 guests who enjoy favorites like murgh malai kabab (Tandoori oven-roasted boneless chicken breast with special seasoning) and the spicy crab cutlet, while Indian music plays softly in the background. A decorative wine rack at the back features local Merlot's and Cabernet's.   Great food, friendly service   We've been enjoying a lot of great food in San Francisco this week, and this was no exception. Showed up late in the afternoon, but they were still open. I've never been in such a narrow, but long and tall restaurant - very interesting layout. The menu was long, and though our waiter/probably owner tried to help us navigate (perhaps we appeared naive), we had some idea what we were doing, and he was only too happy to give me tips on Rogan Josh recipes (theirs was great). Aside from the education, the food was fantastic. Both the Naan with onions and the Roti were addictive (and arrived at the table so fresh they were too hot to be touched for five minutes, but I burned my fingers trying anyways). The Biryani was generous and flavorful - the chicken tender and juicy. Also, I easily drank two teapots of the Chai tea, not just because we had just come in from the cold, but because it was irresistible. A must, must have. Great post-air-show meal.   Superb Unconventional Indian Cuisine  Superb and unconventional indian cuisine featuring lovingly hand-crafted, mouthwateringly flavorful dishes.
